Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2004

Tasting Notes

Spy Valley Pinot Noir 2004 - Ant Mackenzie

Pinot Noir is hand-harvested from vines in our Marlborough vineyard, gently separated from the stems and fermented in small, traditional open-top vats. These vats are hand-plunged to extract colour and tannin, and after pressing the wine is aged in French oak barrels. Fruit-driven in style with soft tannins and spicy oak.
A small amount of the 2004 vintage was bottled into 1.5L magnums for release in 2008. Only available as a magnum.

Winemaking

Four separate blocks within our vineyard were hand picked and gently crushed into 5 tonne ferment tanks. After a short period cold soaking fermentation started naturally with 'wild' vineyard yeasts. After this fermentation the wine was pressed off the skins then aged in oak barrels for 16 months.

Deep red

Bouquet

Dark berry fruits and ripe black plums are the main features. A subtle tar/mineral note along with the complexities derived from barrel aging contribute interest to the nose.

Palate

Fruit sweetness and palate weight are the hallmarks of this wine. Underlying soft tannins coupled with a lengthy finish complete this wine.
