Season Overview 2008

2008 was one of New Zealand's best summers in a long long time.  Spring in Marlborough arrived on time with small, isolated regional frost events having no detrimental effects on the Spy Valley vineyards.

December was warm, sunny and without much of the trademark spring winds.  One rain event on the 14th left the vines perfectly positioned for a stress-free flowering and fruitset.  The vines obliged and set to their potential.  The remainder of summer was hot and dry with rain events occuring just prior to water restrictions being imposed.  Perfect timing.

Vintage began mid March in keeping with the warm summer.  Pinot Noir and Chardonnay being the first grapes through in perfect condition.  There was a certain amount of winery receival pressure with the onset of Sauvignon ripening, which occured in a compressed manner and slightly above estimate on yield predictions.  The winery ran 24/7 for the main three week vintage period and all fruit fitted in the winery, just.  Mid vintage rain increased the pressure with some of the later ripening sites showing signs of deterioriation.

The later ripening varieties Riesling and Merlot, were sufficiently underripe during the disease pressure and 'weathered the storm' to be harvested ripe and in good condition.  Flavours across all varieties show excellent depth and balance.
